Why Watch This
Abnormal Rodeo Blues blends the gritty atmosphere of rural Japan with the surreal, erotic aesthetics of pink cinema, delivering a bizarre yet oddly compelling ride through a broken rodeo circuit. Its off‑beat humor and stark visual style make it a standout oddity in the 2020 indie slate.
Best For
Cult film enthusiasts, Pink cinema fans, Fans of surreal comedy, Midnight viewers, Japanese indie aficionados
The CinePearl Take
The film’s lone heroine, played by an anonymous newcomer, brings a raw vulnerability that anchors the otherwise disjointed narrative. Its pacing lurches between slow, meditative shots of dusty arenas and sudden bursts of lurid, stylized set‑pieces, mirroring the protagonist’s unstable mental state. Themes of escapism and the commodification of desire surface through the rodeo’s absurd spectacle, turning the movie into a strange meditation on performance and exploitation.
