The CinePearl Take

Simon Verhoeven's direction leans into long, static shots that amplify the protagonist's sense of entrapment, while the sparse cast delivers a haunting, almost wordless performance that lingers. The film's muted color palette underscores the thematic gap between personal desire and societal expectation. Though the narrative drifts, the thematic focus on class and identity remains razor‑sharp, rewarding patience with a resonant emotional punch.
