The CinePearl Take
Russell’s direction pushes the boundaries of 1980s special effects, turning the protagonist’s drug‑induced experiments into a kaleidoscopic nightmare. William Hurt delivers a compelling performance, balancing intellectual curiosity with primal terror. The film’s pacing is deliberately uneven, mirroring the disorienting effects of the hallucinogens, while Blair Brown provides a grounded emotional counterpoint. Its exploration of identity and consciousness remains resonant decades later.
