The CinePearl Take
Higashi’s debut shines most in the understated performance of newcomer Aiko Tanaka, whose nuanced portrayal of Maya captures the push‑and‑pull of cultural loyalty and personal ambition. The film’s deliberate pacing rewards patience, allowing the audience to linger on small gestures that speak louder than dialogue. Themes of diaspora, generational trauma, and the search for belonging are handled with a deft, almost lyrical touch, making Belonging a quiet but powerful addition to contemporary indie cinema.
