The CinePearl Take

“El mal” is a study in restrained dread; the pacing is deliberately languid, allowing the unease to seep in rather than explode. Fabra’s nuanced portrayal of a woman haunted by both external forces and internal guilt stands out as the film’s emotional core. The cinematography leans into chiaroscuro, turning everyday settings into claustrophobic stage sets that echo the characters’ psychological traps. While the narrative occasionally meanders, the film rewards viewers who appreciate mood over conventional plot twists.
