The CinePearl Take
Trueba’s direction balances lyrical nostalgia with unflinching brutality, letting the story breathe without resorting to melodrama. The lead performance—anchored by a quietly magnetic portrayal of Abad Gómez—captures the doctor’s idealism and growing disillusionment with a restrained intensity. The pacing, deliberate yet never sluggish, mirrors the slow march toward tragedy, while the recurring motif of handwritten letters underscores the film’s meditation on memory and erasure.
