Why Watch This

Grand Tour is Miguel Gomes’s audacious meditation on memory and modernity, weaving a road‑trip across Portugal into a kaleidoscopic blend of staged scenes and real‑world footage. Its lyrical visual language and off‑beat humor make it a rare glimpse into a country’s cultural crossroads.

The CinePearl Take

Gomes’s direction feels both frantic and contemplative, letting the camera linger on sun‑bleached landscapes while intercutting with archival clips that hint at a fading past. The film’s pacing ebbs and flows, mirroring the unpredictability of the journey itself, and its recurring motif of a broken compass becomes a poetic symbol for the characters’ search for direction. Though the cast remains anonymous, the ensemble’s naturalistic performances ground the film’s more surreal moments, creating a compelling tension between reality and imagination.
