The CinePearl Take
Director Hiroshi Tanaka’s debut is anchored by a hauntingly physical performance from newcomer Akiro Saito, who embodies the titular “fish‑person” with a blend of vulnerability and menace. The film’s deliberate pacing mirrors the ocean’s ebb and flow, allowing the thematic undercurrents—environmental neglect and identity loss—to surface organically. While the narrative occasionally drifts into abstraction, the atmospheric score and luminous long‑takes keep the experience immersive.
