Shalini Adnani’s “Our Share of Sand” is a quietly powerful coming-of-age drama that explores family, privilege and the human cost of illegal sand mining. When 12-year-old Maya returns to rural India to reconnect with her estranged father, an accident connected to his business forces her to question the comfortable family life she thought she understood.

The CinePearl Take

Our Share of Sand takes an intimate approach to difficult subjects including class inequality, child labour, environmental exploitation and family complicity. Maya Mehta gives the story its emotional center as Maya gradually discovers the uncomfortable truth behind her father’s livelihood. Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Ellora Torchia add depth to the fractured family dynamic, while Adnani maintains a restrained style that allows the moral questions to emerge naturally. Its deliberate pace may not appeal to viewers looking for conventional drama, but the film’s child-centred perspective makes its examination of privilege and responsibility particularly affecting.
