Why Watch This

Ulrike Ottinger re‑imagines the infamous Elizabeth Báthory myth through a hypnotic, painterly lens that feels more like a living tableau than conventional narrative. The film’s stark, monochrome palette and lingering long takes turn every scene into a meditation on power, desire, and the erasure of women’s histories.

Best For

Art‑house fans, Historical drama lovers, Feminist film enthusiasts, European cinema buffs, Dark folklore admirers

The CinePearl Take

Ottinger’s direction is unapologetically experimental, letting the camera linger on the Countess’s ritualistic ceremonies until they become almost tactile. The central performance—delivered by an uncredited actress who embodies the Countess with a cold, regal poise—anchors the film’s otherwise abstract aesthetic. While the pacing can feel deliberately slow, it rewards viewers who are willing to surrender to its atmospheric weight, turning the legend into a haunting study of gendered violence.
