The CinePearl Take
Mumenthaler’s direction is impeccably patient, allowing the river’s surface to mirror the protagonist’s fragmented recollections. The lead—though unnamed in the credits—delivers a subtly powerful performance, conveying dread and longing with barely a glance. The sound design, dominated by water’s murmur, amplifies the film’s claustrophobic intimacy, while the sparse dialogue forces the audience to listen to what’s left unsaid. It’s a slow burn that lingers long after the final frame.
