Why Watch This

Chaitanya Tamhane’s “The Disciple” offers a painstakingly intimate look at the world of Hindustani classical music, turning a single student‑guru relationship into a meditation on ambition, devotion, and the cost of artistic perfection. Its quiet visual language and lingering soundscapes make the film feel like a raga itself—subtle, evolving, and profoundly resonant.

Best For

The CinePearl Take

Shashank Shinde delivers a masterclass in restraint, embodying the restless yearning of a tabla prodigy who never quite reaches his guru’s lofty expectations. Tamhane’s pacing is deliberately measured, allowing each practice session and silent pause to accumulate emotional weight. The film’s central theme—art as both salvation and prison—unfolds with a lyrical patience that rewards viewers who are willing to sit with the discomfort of unfulfilled potential.
