Why Watch This
Robert De Niro delivers a chillingly comic portrait of a delusional wannabe comedian whose obsession with fame spirals into a hostage‑style crime. Scorsese’s razor‑sharp satire of celebrity culture feels eerily prescient, making the film both unsettling and oddly hilarious.
Best For
Dark comedy fans, Scorsese aficionados, Cult‑film lovers, Satire seekers, Character‑study enthusiasts, 1970s‑era cinema buffs
The CinePearl Take
De Niro’s performance is the film’s engine, balancing manic bravado with a vulnerable yearning for acceptance. Scorsese’s deliberate pacing lets the audience sit with Rupert’s uncomfortable moments, amplifying the social commentary. The film’s blend of crime‑drama tension and absurdist humor creates a uniquely unsettling tone that still resonates today.
