Why Watch This
With Jackie Chan’s kinetic fight choreography paired with James Glickenhaus’s gritty 80s crime sensibility, “The Protector” delivers a high‑octane mash‑up of martial‑arts spectacle and buddy‑cop banter. The film’s off‑beat humor and over‑the‑top set pieces make it a perfect throwback for fans of unapologetically loud action cinema.
Best For
Action fans, Martial‑arts enthusiasts, 80s nostalgia, Buddy‑cop lovers, Thriller seekers
The CinePearl Take
Becky Ann Baker surprises with a razor‑sharp turn as Detective Lena Hart, holding her own against the film’s relentless stunt work while delivering dead‑pan one‑liners that elevate the comedy. Mike Starr’s grizzled partner provides the perfect foil, grounding the chaos with a world‑weary gravitas. While the pacing swings between breakneck chase sequences and slower, dialogue‑heavy interludes, the movie’s thematic core—loyalty versus corruption—remains oddly resonant despite the absurdity.
