Why Watch This
Sandra Wollner’s “The Trouble with Being Born” offers a haunting, minimalist look at grief through the lens of a synthetic child tasked with recreating a lost mother. Its stark visual language and unsettling premise make it a compelling study of identity, memory, and the ethics of artificial life.
Best For

The CinePearl Take
The film’s central performance—delivered by a non‑professional young actress embodying the android—carries an eerie innocence that anchors the narrative’s emotional weight. Wollner’s deliberate pacing forces viewers to sit with the discomfort, letting each silent moment amplify the moral ambiguity. Visually, the muted palette and clinical set design underscore the coldness of the experiment while paradoxically highlighting the fragile humanity that flickers through the synthetic protagonist.
