Why Watch This

Steve Beck’s 2001 remake dazzles with a kaleidoscopic, glass‑enclosed mansion that becomes a character in its own right, and each of the 13 ghosts gets a distinct visual identity that feels fresh for early‑2000s CGI. The film balances family‑drama tension with over‑the‑top horror set‑pieces, making it a guilty‑pleasure showcase of inventive set design and campy scares.

Best For

Horror fans, Ghost film lovers, Campy horror enthusiasts, 2000s nostalgia seekers, Fans of practical effects, Family‑drama thriller addicts

The CinePearl Take

While the plot can feel thin, the film’s real strength lies in its production design—every corridor and trap is a visual puzzle that rewards repeat viewings. Tony Shalhoub brings a surprisingly grounded gravitas to the eccentric Dr. Royce, and Matthew Lillard’s manic energy injects just enough comic relief to keep the tension from becoming oppressive. Thematically, the movie riffs on greed and the consequences of unlocking doors you weren’t meant to open, a classic horror caution wrapped in a glossy, high‑concept premise.
