The CinePearl Take

The film’s strength lies in Chatterton’s layered portrayal of a respectable wife whose yearning feels both scandalous and sympathetic. John Cromwell’s direction keeps the narrative tight, letting the moral tension build without melodramatic excess. Paul Lukas provides a cool counterpoint as the charismatic lover, while the supporting cast adds texture. Though its pacing feels measured by modern standards, the thematic boldness still resonates.
