Why Watch This
Tom Fujino’s “What Should We Have Done?” pulls back the curtain on Japan’s 2011 triple disaster, weaving together survivor testimonies, archival footage, and stark government reports. It’s a sobering meditation on collective memory and the choices that shape a nation’s future.

The CinePearl Take
Fujino’s patient pacing lets each interviewee’s voice breathe, especially the haunting reflections of a former TEPCO engineer who admits “we were too slow to act.” The film’s visual style—quiet, lingering shots of abandoned coastal towns—underscores the lingering trauma. Its central theme, the tension between accountability and survival, feels both uniquely Japanese and universally resonant.
