Why Watch This
Takashi Shimizu returns to the eerie terrain of Japanese folklore, turning the simple act of speaking into a nightmarish threat. The film’s claustrophobic set pieces and relentless sound design make “The Mouths” a visceral experience that lingers long after the credits roll.

The CinePearl Take
Shimizu’s direction is as precise as it is unsettling, using long, unbroken takes to let dread build organically. Though the cast remains anonymous, the lead’s muted performance—caught between fear and fascination—anchors the film’s exploration of silenced voices. The pacing deliberately drags at key moments, allowing the audience to feel the suffocating weight of the unseen menace. Thematically, the movie probes how societal pressure can turn ordinary speech into a weapon of horror.
