The CinePearl Take
Director Hiroshi Tanaka balances kinetic fight choreography with quiet moments of introspection, allowing the film’s central performance—by newcomer Kenji Saito as the trembling but determined rikishi—to shine. The pacing is deliberate, letting the audience feel the weight of each training session while the narrative builds toward a cathartic climax. Themes of honor, identity, and the clash between tradition and modernity resonate long after the final bell.
