The CinePearl Take

Waad al‑Kateab’s on‑the‑ground cinematography feels almost voyeuristic, pulling viewers into the cramped hallways and bomb‑scarred streets of Aleppo. Edward Watts’ editing gives the film a deliberate, breath‑by‑breath pacing that mirrors the oscillation between ordinary moments and sudden violence. The central theme—love persisting amid destruction—is amplified by the tender scenes of Waad cradling her infant, making the tragedy feel profoundly personal.
