Why Watch This
Bruce Malmuth’s 1983 thriller blends gritty street‑level crime with a darkly comic premise: a low‑level hustler fakes his own disappearance to escape a dangerous debt. It’s a rare early showcase for William Forsythe, whose sharp‑edged performance hints at the intensity he’d later bring to bigger roles.

The CinePearl Take
Malmuth keeps the film’s momentum steady, letting the tension rise through a series of escalating missteps rather than flashy set‑pieces. Forsythe’s portrayal of the desperate anti‑hero is both charismatic and unsettling, while Jeffrey Tambor provides a surprisingly menacing foil. The movie’s uneven pacing is offset by a sardonic tone that rewards viewers who appreciate a slow‑burn, morally ambiguous narrative.
