The CinePearl Take
Matt Dillon (as Jack) delivers a chillingly magnetic performance that oscillates between charm and cold calculation, anchoring the film’s extreme visual tableau. Von Trier’s pacing is deliberate, allowing each “scene” to build a grotesque masterpiece rather than a conventional slasher. The film’s recurring motif of the “seven sins” elevates the gore into a disturbing allegory about artistic obsession and moral decay.
