Why Watch This
The Black Phone delivers a tightly wound blend of 80‑era suburban dread and supernatural menace, anchored by a terrifyingly calm Ethan Hawke as the vengeful kidnapper. Its premise—a disconnected rotary phone that lets a captive child hear the dead—turns simple suspense into a chilling cat‑and‑mouse game.
Best For
Horror fans, Supernatural thriller lovers, 80s nostalgia seekers, Scott Derrickson admirers, Teen horror enthusiasts
The CinePearl Take
Mason Thames (as Finney) brings a raw, palpable fear that grounds the film’s more fantastical elements, while Hawke’s understated menace makes the antagonist unforgettable. Derrickson paces the narrative with deliberate restraint, letting dread build before each supernatural reveal. The film’s sound design—especially the static‑filled whispers on the black phone—amplifies the tension, turning every ring into a pulse‑pounding moment.
