The CinePearl Take

Director Mike Christie balances the exuberance of Wham!’s performances with the quiet tension of a China still under strict cultural controls, creating a rhythm that feels both celebratory and reflective. The archival footage of the band’s impromptu street gigs is electrifying, while the interviews with local officials add a sobering counterpoint. Christie’s pacing lets the viewer savor the clash of Western pop excess and Chinese restraint, making the film feel like a time capsule rather than a straightforward concert doc. The documentary’s strongest thread is its exploration of how music can bridge political divides, a theme that feels resonant today.
