Why Watch This
"River" delivers a delightfully off‑beat road‑trip comedy that turns a simple canoe journey down a Japanese river into a cascade of surreal mishaps and heartfelt moments. Its clever visual gags paired with an unexpected emotional core make it a refreshing summer watch.
Best For
Comedy lovers, Indie film fans, Road‑trip enthusiasts, Quirky humor seekers, Fans of Japanese cinema
The CinePearl Take
Yamaguchi’s direction balances slapstick set‑pieces with a surprisingly tender look at friendship, letting the river itself become a character that mirrors the protagonists’ turbulence. The breakout performance comes from the uncredited newcomer Hiroshi Tanaka, whose deadpan delivery anchors the chaos. While the pacing occasionally drifts like the current, the film’s thematic focus on letting go keeps the narrative afloat.
