Why Watch This

It imagines a wildly anachronistic scenario where Tokugawa Ieyasu, the 17th‑century shogun, is thrust into the cut‑throat world of 21st‑century Japanese politics. The film blends dead‑pan satire with period‑drama aesthetics, offering a fresh lens on power, tradition, and modern bureaucracy.

The CinePearl Take

Hideki Takeuchi’s direction is daring, juxtaposing austere Edo‑era set pieces with the sterile corridors of contemporary parliament. The lead—an unknown actor who channels Ieyasu’s steely resolve—delivers a surprisingly nuanced performance, especially in the heated cabinet debates. While the pacing occasionally stalls in exposition‑heavy flashbacks, the film’s central theme—how absolute authority translates across centuries—remains compelling.
