The CinePearl Take
Cagney’s raw, magnetic energy turns Tom Powers into an unforgettable anti‑hero, while Wellman’s kinetic camera work keeps the narrative racing forward. The film’s stark black‑and‑white aesthetic amplifies its moral ambiguity, turning a simple crime story into a meditation on the corrupting lure of the American Dream. Though its runtime feels brisk, the final act’s brutal resolution lingers long after the credits roll.
