The CinePearl Take
Soldini’s patient pacing allows the simmering tension between ambition and tradition to rise naturally, while the breakout performance of the unnamed lead—portrayed with quiet intensity—anchors the story’s emotional core. The film’s recurring motif of taste as a metaphor for power is both elegant and thought‑provoking, though at times the narrative drifts into languid territory. Still, the lush production design and evocative score reward viewers who relish atmospheric, character‑driven histories.
