Why Watch This
Richard Ayoade’s debut blends dead‑pan wit with a sharply observed portrait of adolescent anxiety, delivering a uniquely British take on first love and family turmoil. Craig Roberts’ off‑beat charm and the film’s stylized visual flair make it a standout coming‑of‑age experience.
Best For
Coming‑of‑age fans, British indie lovers, Quirky rom‑com fans, Teen drama enthusiasts, Ayoade admirers
The CinePearl Take
Roberts delivers a magnetic performance as the neurotic teen Oliver, balancing sarcasm with genuine vulnerability. Ayoade’s direction keeps the pacing deliberately lazy, mirroring the protagonist’s inner world while the crisp cinematography turns ordinary suburbia into a visual metaphor for teenage dread. The film’s soundtrack and witty narration elevate what could have been a simple teen story into a cult‑classic tone piece.
