Why Watch This

The Art of the Steal pulls back the curtain on the high‑stakes legal and political drama surrounding the Barnes Foundation’s move, blending investigative journalism with a narrative that feels more like a courtroom thriller than a traditional art documentary. It reveals how a world‑class collection can become a pawn in a battle over power, money, and public access.

The CinePearl Take

Don Argott’s razor‑sharp direction keeps the complex saga of the Barnes Foundation surprisingly tight, letting the personalities—particularly the tenacious former trustee and the charismatic new board members—drive the story. The pacing balances archival footage with on‑camera interviews, creating a rhythm that builds tension without sacrificing context. The film’s central theme—how power and money can reshape cultural heritage—remains eerily relevant today, making it a must‑see for anyone interested in the politics of art.
