The CinePearl Take
John Lone delivers a magnetic, nuanced performance as the adolescent emperor, capturing both regal poise and fragile vulnerability. Bertolucci’s pacing balances the grandeur of imperial pageantry with quieter, reflective moments that let Puyi’s inner conflict breathe. The film’s themes of identity, exile, and the crushing weight of history feel surprisingly resonant today, making the 2‑hour epic feel both monumental and intimately human.
