Why Watch This

Lauren Miller Rogen’s “Babies” turns the question of whether to have children into a warm, contemporary comedy-drama about adulthood, friendship and relationships. A happily married couple comfortable with their child-free life are forced to reconsider their choices when their recently divorced friend and her young daughter move in with them.

The CinePearl Take

Babies finds its strongest material in the awkward realities of adulthood rather than treating parenthood as a simple life milestone. Seth Rogen and Anna Kendrick bring an appealing comic chemistry to a couple forced to confront a question they have deliberately avoided, while the arrival of their friend's daughter disrupts their carefully balanced routine. The film uses humour to explore commitment, friendship, responsibility and the very different ways people imagine their futures. Its ensemble, which also includes Dan Stevens, Issa Rae and Kate Berlant, gives the story plenty of room for contrasting perspectives on relationships and parenthood.
