Why Watch This
A Bad Summer delivers a haunting portrait of a coastal town spiraling into ecological disaster, blending raw teenage angst with a relentless climate thriller vibe. Director Hideo Jōjō’s visual style—sun‑bleached frames that slowly bleed into smog‑choked night—creates a palpable sense of dread that lingers long after the credits roll.
Best For
Climate thriller fans, Indie drama lovers, Japanese cinema enthusiasts, Summer vibe seekers, Moody night in, Emerging talent hunters
The CinePearl Take
Jōjō’s debut feature shines thanks to newcomer Maya Tanaka’s quietly ferocious turn as a high‑school surfer forced to confront her community’s denial. The film’s deliberate pacing—lingering on sun‑drenched beaches before crashing into chaotic storm sequences—mirrors the slow burn of environmental apathy. Its central theme, the clash between youthful optimism and looming catastrophe, feels both timely and timeless, even if the script occasionally wavers under its own ambition.
