The CinePearl Take
Alan Edwards delivers a hauntingly restrained performance, embodying the film’s central tension between yearning and restraint. Resnais’s deliberate pacing lets each lingering shot breathe, turning dialogue into a visual rhythm. The recurring motif of the marble staircase underscores the theme that memory is both a path and a trap, making the film feel timelessly unsettling.
