Why Watch This
Takashi Miike twists a seemingly ordinary search for companionship into a nightmarish study of desire and control. The film’s slow‑burn premise—auditions for a new wife—unravels into visceral horror that lingers long after the credits roll.
Best For
Horror fans, Japanese cinema lovers, Cult film enthusiasts, Dark romance fans, Thriller addicts
The CinePearl Take
Ryo Ishibashi delivers a chillingly restrained performance, embodying grief that feels almost mechanical, while Eihi Shiina’s unsettling calm makes every glance feel like a threat. Miike’s pacing is deliberate, letting ordinary moments fester before erupting in graphic terror, reinforcing the film’s commentary on the commodification of love. Thematically, Audition probes how far we’ll go to fill emptiness, turning the audition room into a metaphorical hunting ground.
