Why Watch This

Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s “Evil Does Not Exist” offers a rare, meditative look at how ordinary lives confront the gray zones of morality, using long, observational takes that let the audience sit with the characters’ discomfort. The film’s minimalist narrative invites viewers to question whether “evil” is a label we impose or a lived experience.

The CinePearl Take

Hamaguchi’s direction is deliberately unhurried, allowing the tension of everyday moments to build into a quiet, almost palpable unease. Though the cast remains uncredited, the lead’s restrained performance anchors the film, conveying a world-weariness that feels both specific and universal. The thematic focus on the elusiveness of moral absolutes is handled with a subtlety that rewards repeat viewings, even as the pacing may test viewers accustomed to conventional plot beats.
