Why Watch This

Clio Barnard’s debut feature, I See Buildings Fall Like Lightning, turns a small-town demolition into a visceral meditation on loss, memory, and the invisible forces that shape our lives. The film’s stark visual language and unflinching sound design make the collapse feel both literal and metaphorical, pulling you into the community’s collective grief.

The CinePearl Take

Barnard’s direction is razor‑sharp, letting the town’s ordinary residents become the film’s unsung heroes. The lead performance by an unknown local actress—who plays a widowed electrician—anchors the narrative with a raw, unvarnished intensity that never feels melodramatic. The pacing is deliberately measured, allowing the rumble of the collapsing structures to echo long after the credits roll, while the recurring motif of lightning underscores the sudden, uncontrollable nature of change.
