Why Watch This

J.C. Chandor delivers a tightly wound portrait of a man battling both the brutal streets of 1981 New York and his own ethical limits. Oscar Isaac’s understated, simmering performance as ambitious oil‑importer Abel Morales makes the stakes feel personal, while the film’s relentless rain‑soaked atmosphere turns every business deal into a high‑tension showdown.

The CinePearl Take

Chandor’s direction is methodical, letting the city’s grime become a character in its own right. Isaac anchors the film with a quiet intensity that never veers into melodrama, and Chastain adds a fierce counterpoint as the determined, morally ambiguous partner. The pacing is deliberate yet never dull, building tension through everyday decisions that feel like life‑or‑death moves. At its core, the movie is a meditation on ambition, family, and the thin line between survival and corruption.
