The CinePearl Take

Mira Nair paints Kampala with vivid color while never losing sight of the quiet determination that drives Phiona’s rise. Mubiru David’s performance as the young prodigy is magnetic; his eyes convey both the fear of the unknown and the fierce focus of a champion. The pacing deftly alternates between the tension of tournament matches and tender moments at home, letting the triumph feel earned. Themes of hope, mentorship, and the power of community linger long after the final checkmate.
