The CinePearl Take

Whitaker’s performance is nothing short of masterful—he captures Amin’s charisma and madness with a chilling authenticity that earned him an Oscar. The film’s deliberate pacing lets the tension build slowly, mirroring the doctor’s gradual realization of the regime’s horrors. Macdonald’s direction balances the intimate and the epic, using lush Ugandan landscapes to underscore the moral decay at the heart of the story. Ultimately, it’s a study in how power can corrupt both the tyrant and those who serve him.
