Why Watch This
Hirokazu Koreeda trades his signature family dramas for a haunting, modern‑mythic thriller that pits a weary Tokyo detective against a series of ritual killings inspired by the ancient Asura legends. The show blends sleek urban noir with unsettling folklore, delivering a meditation on guilt, redemption, and the darkness that lives inside us all.
Best For
Drama fans, Mythology enthusiasts, Slow‑burn lovers, Japanese TV aficionados, Thoughtful viewers
The CinePearl Take
Koreeda’s direction is meticulous, letting each clue linger long enough to let the tension fester while never sacrificing narrative momentum. The breakout performance by newcomer Yui Tanaka as the tormented detective’s partner adds a fragile humanity that anchors the series’ more surreal moments. Themes of moral ambiguity are explored with a quiet intensity that feels both timeless and eerily contemporary.
